Police take over Ekiti varsity over workers’ protest

There was palpable fear in Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti on Thursday as over 100 officers from the Ekiti State Police Command took over the institution to forestall further protest by workers.

This came barely four days after workers protested and grounded academic and administrative activities at the institution to express their grievances over the dismissal of over 900 members of staff.

The Nation learnt that the presence of security operatives might be informed by decision of the institution’s organised labour under the aegis of Joint Action Committee to continue pressing home their demands on the reinstatement of sacked workers.

When our reporter visited the institution, about 10 van with no fewer than 100 armed riot policeman were positioned at strategic places within and outside the institution.

However, academic and administrative activities were no affected but there was apprehension within the university community.

The leaders of joint Action Committee comprising of members of Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Academic Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) were seen discussing on the development.
